The Distributor of the Week is an ongoing feature that we are proud to present weekly.
Check back every Friday as we highlight another amazing team member.
Name: Stephanie Costa
Location: Kitchener, Ontario
Start Date: March 2017
SL: As a newer member of the Distributor team, why did you choose SweetLegs?
SC: I got my very first pair of SweetLegs when I was pregnant with my son, and (not really knowing what to expect) I was excited to try the new trend that everyone in my town was talking about. I got my first pair, Black Licorice, and fell in love!! I remember wearing them and washing them the same week, just so I could wear them more often! After returning to work from maternity leave, I slowly realized just how challenging being a Mom truly is, especially when you’re a working mom. I worked part time because I still wanted to spend some time with my son, but the money just wasn’t adding up. My husband Kyle suggested I start selling SweetLegs because I loved them so much (and by this point, I had 4 pairs), but I was hesitant because I just couldn’t see myself working for a typical company that requires you to recruit team members. After some convincing, I decided to apply anyways and try my luck! Looking back, that was the BEST decision I could’ve made! I learned when I applied that SweetLegs was nothing CLOSE to a multilevel marketing company and decided to take my shot!
SL: How has being a SweetLegs Distributor impacted your life?
SC: Tremendously! When I got approved, I was super excited, but not quite sure how I’d do it all. We were not in the greatest financial situation, and I knew I wanted to try it, but I wasn’t sure how long we could keep up. I maxed out my credit card making my first order, and made a promise to myself that I would succeed. A few weeks after being approved, we moved to Kitchener and were able to clear our debt, make a larger order and start building my business locally! I now have the financial stability and freedom to stay home with my son Jacob, who’s 2, and build my business from home! I’ve met some amazing customers and made some great friends with other IDs within Canada. I love telling people that I have friends in all around Canada now! These women, both at HQ and IDs, are truly tremendous people who are strong, supportive and so damn strong! It’s inspired me to dream bigger, think bigger and take chances!! 2017 was a huge change for myself and my family, and 2018 is looking to be even bigger for my family & myself!
SL: Tell us something exciting about yourself that others may not know?
SC: I’m a certified Primary/Junior Teacher, and am starting the process of getting back into the schools and the classrooms locally. I also started an online blog (www.parenthooddiaries.com) while on mat leave, talking openly and honestly about the challenges we face as mothers (and fathers) in this technology phase. It’s still up, but definitely not running. I haven’t gotten back into writing for quite some time, but I’d love to one day!
SL: What is your secret skill?
SC: I can do Tigger’s laugh from Winnie the Pooh bang on. I also worked as a Vision Therapist for 4 years and basically taught myself how to move my eyes all over the place – pretty exciting, right?
“I love that SweetLegs appeals to all body shapes, sizes, ages, and that we surround ourselves in body positivity.”
SL: Tell us about your most memorable customer interaction?
SC: I love meeting those customers that have gathered the bravery to approach me or come to a SweetLegs party that they were invited to but have no intention of trying anything on because they “don’t do leggings”. I met a lady at a party recently who said she’d be buying for some family members, but definitely not herself. After some convincing from both myself and the other guests at the party, she decided to try on one of my favourite pairs, Graphite. She came out the bathroom, somewhat slowly, but touching her legs saying how nice they felt and how that they fit comfortably. The moment she got in front of a mirror with others around, the smile that erupted across her face was contagious! She twirled in front of the mirror for a full 5 minutes, then went straight back to the table and grabbed a few more pairs to try on. She left that party buying 10 pairs and getting one pair free with a loyalty card, and most of her new SweetLegs were for herself! I love that SweetLegs appeals to all body shapes, sizes, ages, and that we surround ourselves in body positivity. It’s one of the reasons why I’m so proud to be a part of SweetLegs!
SL: Share an amazing SweetLegs story with us!
SC: My Grandmother who is in her 70s heard that I had starting selling leggings. She never really wore leggings before, but said she would try them to support me. She knew nothing about SweetLegs or our prints, but the moment she saw the pairs my sister and I were wearing, she instantly said “oh, I’m too old for that” and “old ladies should not be wearing these colours, they’re for young ladies like you”. I remember the first time she tried on a pair to amuse me – I think I started her love for SweetLegs! During the next few months my sister had a party and she attended and bought 2 pairs; I would come by for a visit and bring a few pairs she requested; I visited the SweetLegs retail store in Kelowna and bought us all a pair of matching SweetLegs. She’s now got 7 or 8 pairs, and says she loves them and needs longer tops to wear with them, not to mention my aunt says she gets lots of compliments at church when she wears them!
SL: How many donuts can you eat in one sitting?
SC: Umm…should I run to Timmies now or later? Oh, did you want some…?
SL: Have you learned any lessons from running your own SweetLegs business?
SC: I’ve learned so much! Never be afraid to ask for advice or help – there are others that have learned from mistakes and can teach you a thing or two! I would definitely recommend you do all your research first and ensure you know and understand what you’re getting into. Know that it takes a lot of work, and to put yourself out there and talk to people! I never would have talked to a random stranger before SweetLegs, and now I do it all the time! Never give up, everyone experiences slow points, but if you keep going, it will get better! I decided from the beginning that I was going to do this whole-heartedly or I wasn’t going to do it at all! I’ve learned so much about myself in this whole process!
SL: What makes your life Sweet?
SC: I wouldn’t be where I am without my wonderful, supportive and loving husband, Kyle. He was the one who convinced me I should do it, he’s been the best cheerleader the entire time, and he helps me load and unload after every party or event (what more could I ask for!). My son, Jacob, is the best thing that hubby & I have together, and he’s such a great kid! He allows me time to focus on SweetLegs (with the occasional tickling and wrestling session), and although it can be a challenge learning how to balance work and family when you work out of your home, I wouldn’t change it for the world!! My family have also been so supportive when it comes to providing support, helping me with Jacob and promoting my business to family, friends, and coworkers! I wouldn’t be able to involve myself in my community without their help. THANK YOU FAMILY!
